Who is Wez Clarke?

Wez Clarke is a two times Grammy-nominated and Grammy-winning engineer behind 13 UK Number 1 singles, with hits for artists including Sigala, MK, Beyoncé, Rudimental, Tinie Tempah, Naughty Boy, Zara Larsson and Little Mix. He mixed Clean Bandit and Jess Glynne’s "Rather Be", which won a Grammy in 2015.

Who is Masterchannel?

Masterchannel is using Artificial Intelligence to democratize professional-sounding music, giving bedroom producers the opportunity to compete with major signed artists for listener attention. Based in Oslo, Norway, Masterchannel launched in 2022. Since then, Grammy-winning producers and people with strong credits have become Masterchannel converts, such as JT Roach and Skinny Days. Masterchannel's aim is to make audio engineering technicalities obsolete for music producers.

Why did you work together?

As Wez Clarke puts it himself: "The exciting thing about the clone is that it's opening up what I can deliver to a much wider audience of bedroom artists and producers. It’s great that they can experience working with a major engineer - I would have loved to have had the opportunity to use something like this when I was just starting out, because it’s a perfect way to learn. Producers can get so used to the way their music sounds, and not realize how much better it could get. The clone gives everyone the chance to make their music sound as good as released music, and ultimately they’ll learn how to achieve that professional sound themselves."

How does the Wez Clarke AI clone work?

All Masterchannel models use an AI concept called reinforcement learning instead of a large training dataset of before and after examples. This means that the AI follows its own purpose as it works on a track, getting a reward it if it does something well. Masterchannel has perfected what makes a well-engineered track and has learnt how to mathematically encode that into technical criteria for the system. For his clone, Wez Clarke has helped refine those criteria to make the system perceive the sound of a track like he does.

How did you work together?

We first gathered information about every detail in Wez Clarke's engineering process, the equipment he uses, and his listening environment. In an iterative process, we then taught our system to evaluate the sound of a track according to Wez Clarke's preferences and make adjustments to meet his quality standards.

What does it cost?

The price for the Unlimited Pro tier which includes access to Wez Clarke AI downloads is set to $30/month or $240/year. It includes unlimited access to both the normal mastering by Masterchannel and the Wez Clarke AI. Unlimited access means unlimited uploads, previews and full resolution downloads.

How will Wez Clarke be compensated?

Wez receives a fair share of the revenue Masterchannel generates from the Unlimited Pro subscription.

What resolutions do you offer?

Output resolutions are matched to the resolution a user uploads. The AI supports resolutions up to 192kHz at 32bit.

Why do you not offer user adjustments/tweaking parameters?

The nature of working with a human engineer is to trust them with their decisions, freeing yourself from technical responsibilities. Masterchannel and the Wez Clarke AI clone work in the same way. If you're not happy with aspects of the master, we encourage you to upload an updated mix. The AI will pick up on the adjustments you have made and devlier an updated master while making sure it is still within technical norms and translates well across playback systems.

How do you ensure compatibility with streaming platforms?

The output matches Wez Clarke's target loudness, dynamics and peak levels he delivers as a human engineer.
