Spatial Upmixing FAQs

Masterchannel's Spatial AI can convert stereo files into Spatial Audio files. This document explains how this process works.

What is Spatial Upmixing?

Spatial Upmixing is the process of turning a traditional stereo file into a Spatial Audio file.

How much does it cost?

We charge between USD $10 to $20 per song, depending on the volume and frequency of requested upmixes. Please get in touch for volume discounts.

How does it work on a technical level?

Masterchannel's Spatial AI first extracts stems from your stereo master (e.g. vocals, drums, etc.). It then places them in a virtual 3D audio space to produce a Spatial Audio mix. The audio is finally processed in a way that ensures that the Spatial Audio master has an emotional feel that is as similar as possible to the original stereo master. The dynamic ratio between elements/stems is fully preserved.

How does Spatial AI compare to human studio engineers?

Human studio engineers perform many manual steps to add a more artistic touch to Spatial Audio masters, which is why they charge significantly higher rates. Masterchannel's Spatial AI, on the other hand, is intended for customers who are content with their current stereo workflows but require a scalable and cost-effective solution to spatialize their releases.

What is the difference between Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos?

Dolby Atmos is Dolby's proprietary Spatial Audio format and a trademark of Dolby Laboratories. Spatial Audio files produced by Masterchannel's Spatial AI are fully compatible with Dolby Atmos.

How do I listen to Spatial Audio files?

You can listen to Spatial Audio files using one of the applications below. You cannot listen to Spatial Audio files by simply opening them with the default player on your computer nor in the Apple Music app, as default players do not support Spatial Audio and will produce incorrect output.

  • Dolby Atmos Renderer - Please note: Playback on the same device is only possible on macOS, not on Windows nor Linux
  • Logic Pro X - Please note: Only open spatial files by right-clicking on them in Finder and then selecting Open With > Logic Pro. Opening/importing files any other way will create an incorrect session. There is also a bug when opening files and playing them back immediately. After opening a file, open the 'Atmos' plugin on the master bus, and switch the monitoring format to 'Dolby Renderer' at the top. After that, the session is loaded correctly and you can freely choose between monitoring formats.
